Libre Office
LibreOffice includes the following components:
Writer (word processor)
Calc (spreadsheet)
Calc has all of the advanced analysis, charting, and decision-making features expected from a high-end spreadsheet. It includes over 300 functions for financial, statistical, and mathematical operations, among others. The Scenario Manager provides “what if” analysis. Calc generates 2-D and 3-D charts, which can be integrated into other LibreOffice documents. You can also open and work with Microsoft Excel workbooks and save them in Excel format. Calc can export spreadsheets to Adobe’s PDF and to HTML. By default files will be saved in the .xlsx (Office 2013+) format.
Impress (presentations)
Impress provides all the common multimedia presentation tools, such as special effects, animation, and drawing tools. It is integrated with the advanced graphics capabilities of LibreOffice’s Draw and Math components. Slide shows can be further enhanced with Fontwork’s special effects text, as well as sound and video clips. Impress is compatible with Microsoft’s PowerPoint file format and can also save your work in numerous graphics formats, including Macromedia Flash (SWF). By default files will be saved in the .pptx (Office 2013+) format.
Draw (vector graphics)
Draw is a vector drawing tool that can produce everything from simple diagrams or flowcharts to 3-D artwork. Its Smart Connectors feature allows you to define your own connection points. You can use Draw to create drawings for use in any of LibreOffice’s other components, and you can create your own clip art and add it to the Gallery. Draw can import graphics from many common formats and save them in over 20 formats, including PNG, HTML, PDF, and Flash.
Base (database)
Base provides tools for day-to-day database work within a simple interface. It can create and edit forms, reports, queries, tables, views, and relations, so that managing a connected database is much the same as in other popular database applications. Base provides many new features, such as the ability to analyze and edit relationships from a diagram view. Base incorporates HSQLDB as its default relational database engine. It can also use dBASE, Microsoft Access, MySQL, or Oracle, or any ODBC-compliant or JDBC-compliant database. Base also provides support for a subset of ANSI-92 SQL.
Math (formula editor)
Math is LibreOffice’s formula or equation editor. You can use it to create complex equations that include symbols or characters not available in standard font sets. While it is most commonly used What is LibreOffice 7.0 to create formulas in other documents, such as Writer and Impress files, Math can also work as a standalone tool. You can save formulas in the standard Mathematical Markup Language (MathML) format for inclusion in web pages and other documents not created by LibreOffice.
Pictures
Shotwell
Shotwell is a really simple photo viewer that lets you enjoy your pictures in seconds.
All you need to do is connect your camera to the computer and transfer the images to Shotwell, either via the File > Import menu or with a quick drag and drop. Shotwell can also import images from a folder in your hard drive.
Once the pictures are in Shotwell's library, they're automatically organized by date. You can then browse them, see them in full screen or play them in a handy slideshow. Besides its photo viewing functionality, Shotwell also includes a set of basic editing tools with which you can rotate or crop the image, adjust levels, enhance it automatically or fix the red eye effect. Shotwell is very easy to use and doesn't require any complicated configuration or technical skills.
Gimp
Gimp graphic editor which performs similarly to other graphic editors like Photo Shop (copywright Adobe Inc). This open source software so it is much cheaper to buy.
As the latest few versions of MS Windows have not included an email package (Outlook Express) you may wish to install a local email client instead of relying on Web based email. Thunderbird is strongly recommended and it contains a calander/tasklist as well., Thunderbird can also be used as an email client from several email hosts which can even be displayed together if they come from different systems like MS Outlook, Hotmail, Gmail, Yahoo Mail .
